THE EXPERIENCE

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM YOUR WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY with sonderwest

If the thought of a camera makes you want to hide, you’ve come to the right place. My approach to wedding photography is built on one core belief: the best photos happen when you’re actually having a good time. I don’t do stiff poses, forced smiles, or "stuffy" vibes. I’m there to capture the magic as it naturally unfolds — the belly laughs, the quiet tears, and the wild dance floor moments you’ll want to relive forever.

HOW IT FEELS TO WORK WITH ME

LIKE AN OLD FRIEND

From the moment you enquire, I’m in your corner. I want to hear about your plans, your dog, and your vision. By the time the wedding rolls around, I’m not just a vendor — I’m a familiar face who knows exactly what makes you both smile.

No awkward posing

I specialise in "camera-shy" couples. I won't leave you standing there wondering what to do with your hands. Instead, I use a relaxed, down-to-earth approach that feels like a stroll with a friend. I’ll give you gentle direction when needed, but mostly, I’m just capturing you being you.

YOUR UNOFFICIAL BRIDESMAID

I’m there for more than just the photos. Whether it’s re-bustling a dress when it breaks, holding your veil in the wind, or making sure you have a glass of water after the ceremony — I’m looking out for you. I’ll keep the timeline moving and the vibes high so you don't have to worry about a thing.

THE BOOKING PROCESS

HOW DOES IT ALL WORK?

STEP 1: THE CONNECTION

We’ll start with a chat (and maybe a coffee) to make sure our vibes align. I want to hear all about your vision, your worries, and your "must-haves."

STEP 2: THE TASTER SESSION

Optional but recommended! This is the ultimate "nerve-shredder." We’ll head to a beautiful cliffside or a spot that means something to you for a relaxed pre-wedding shoot. By the time your wedding day rolls around, you’ll be total pros.

Step 3: The Big Day

I’ll blend into the background with your guests, snapping the candid moments you didn't even know were happening. I’ll recognise when to step in for those epic portraits and when to back off so you can just be present with your loved ones.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What if we are really awkward in front of the camera?

Honestly? Most of my couples say the exact same thing! My specialty is making you forget there's a camera there. No stiff, "prom-style" posing here. I focus on natural movement and genuine connection. I’ll give you simple things to do so you feel relaxed, and before you know it, you’ll actually be having fun.

2. Do you take formal family photos?

Absolutely. While my style is very candid and natural, I know how important those family portraits are for the mantlepiece. We’ll make a list together beforehand to keep them quick and stress-free, so you can get back to the party as fast as possible.

3. How far in advance should we book?

Most couples book 12-18 months in advance, especially for popular summer dates. However, I sometimes have last-minute gaps or weekday availability, so it’s always worth saying hello to check my diary!

4. Do you TRAVEL FOR WEDDINGS?

Yes! I’m based in beautiful Devon and serve Cornwall and the South West regularly, but I love a new adventure. Whether you’re planning a wedding in the Scottish Highlands or a destination elopement abroad, I’m ready to pack my bags. I charge 50p per mile travel fee within the UK, plus any accommodation the night before your wedding, and flights where required for overseas travel.

Frequently Asked Questions

5. What happens if it rains?

Don't worry - some of my favourite shots have happened in the rain! I always carry a few clear umbrellas, and I’m a pro at finding the best light and indoor spots at your venue. We’ll embrace whatever the British weather throws at us.

6. What exactly do you mean by an "unofficial bridesmaid"?

It means I’m in your corner all day. Need a tissue? I’ve got one. Dress needs re-bustling? I’ve seen it a hundred times. I’m there to keep the energy high and make sure you feel supported, hydrated, and calm from start to finish.

7. Will we meet before the wedding?

Definitely. I love to hop on a Zoom or grab a coffee to hear all about your plans. Plus, I highly recommend a Taster Shoot it’s the perfect way to "practice" and get comfortable with me before the big day.

8. How long till I receive the final photos?

I know you’ll be excited! You’ll receive a "Sneak Peek" gallery within 48 hours of your wedding so you can share the news. Your full, hand-edited gallery is typically delivered within 8-12 weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions

9. how many photos will we get?

Every wedding is different, but for a full day of coverage, you can typically expect 750+ high-resolution images, all delivered via a beautiful, password-protected online gallery where you can download and print to your heart’s content.

10. CAN WE GIVE YOU A LIST OF SPECIFIC SHOTS?

I want your gallery to reflect your day, so I absolutely welcome your input! Before the wedding, I’ll send you a questionnaire where you can list your "must-have" family groups and any specific details that are important to you. On the day, I’ll keep that list handy so you don't have to remember a thing - just leave the hunting for Great Grampy John to me!

11. Do you take "table shots" during the meal?

I usually take this time to have a quick break and recharge my batteries (and my cameras!). Plus, most people don't love being photographed while they’re eating. I’ll be back in action the moment the speeches start or as soon as the cake is ready to be cut!

12. Are you insured?

Yes, fully! I have both public liability and professional indemnity insurance. If your venue needs to see a copy of my certificate, just let me know and I’ll get that sent over.

Frequently Asked Questions

13. What equipment do you use?

I use professional-grade Canon mirrorless full-frame cameras and a variety of high-end lenses to capture those creamy, emotive shots you see in my portfolio. I always bring backup cameras, lenses, and heaps of memory cards - because "better safe than sorry" is my motto! I'll also be packing extra lighting equipment, in case we need that too.

14. Do you have a second photographer?

I usually work solo to keep that "friend at the wedding" vibe, which allows me to blend in easily. However, if you're planning a massive celebration or want coverage of both partners getting ready in different locations, I can absolutely add my trusted second shooter, Shena, to your package.

15. WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU'RE ILL AND CAN'T MAKE IT?

In the very unlikely event that I’m ill enough to be unable to attend, I am part of an incredible network of professional photographers who share a similar style and ethos. I will do my absolute best to find a brilliant replacement to step in, so you’re never left without a storyteller.

16. Do we provide you with a meal?

Yes please, and this is always very much appreciated! For full day wedding coverage where I'm on my feet for 8-12 hours, a hot meal during the wedding breakfast keeps me fuelled and ready to go for your evening party. If there isn't a meal provided, I just need a small break to go off-site from the venue to grab some food nearby and take some time to recharge.

Frequently Asked Questions

17. DO WE GET THE RAW FILES?

I don’t provide RAW files, as the editing process is a huge part of the "SonderWest" magic! You’re hiring me for my specific style and vision, and I promise to deliver a beautifully finished collection that represents the best of your day.

18. CAN WE ORDER ALBUMS THROUGH YOU?

Yes! While your digital gallery is perfect for sharing, there is nothing quite like seeing your photos in print. I offer stunning, high-quality heirlooms and albums that are designed to last a lifetime. We can chat about these anytime after your wedding!

19. How many hours of coverage do we need?

This totally depends on your plans! I offer packages from 4 hours up to 12. Most couples find that 8 – 10 hours is the "sweet spot" to cover everything from the morning nerves and champagne pops to the first dance and the party getting started. During our planning chat, we’ll look at your timeline together to make sure we’ve got enough time for the moments that matter most to you, without anything feeling rushed.

20. We’re ready to do this! How do we officially book?

I’m so excited to hear that! To officially save your date in my calendar, I require a signed contract and a 50% retainer payment for full day weddings. For shorter bookings, it's payment in full. Everything is done easily online (no printing or scanning required!). Once that’s sorted, you can tick "Photographer" off your wedding to-do list and relax, knowing I’m officially part of your team!
